Friday 10th May Bergen

After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast our group set off on a guided walking tour of Bergen. This tour showed off the beauty of Bergen a city surrounded by 7 mountains, and of course magnificent fjords. Our guide told us of the very rich history of the city and we saw many beautiful and very old buildings, some tiny and many still made of timber. In the past timber was used extensively for the buildings and because the homes were built so close together, a fire would get out of control and burn many homes, During the 1800s people were encouraged to build brick homes. Our tour also took us to the famous fish markets, located on the dock. We continued on through the old cobblestone streets admiring the architecture and homes and visiting statues of some of Bergen’s famous residents as well as admiring the magnificent parks and gardens. Many of the gardens were full of tulips in full bloom. The walk took just over 4 hours but was very interesting and well worth the effort. Trudy and Rob and Rob and myself, enjoyed a lovely lunch of fish and chips at one of the eateries, located on the dock close to the fish markets. Following lunch, Rob and I decided to take the famous Bergen funicular train to the top of a mountain. Here we were rewarded with magnificent views of Bergen, the nearby mountains and the expansive fjords.  We returned to our hotel and enjoyed a fun night back in our room, eating left-over sushi and consuming a few drinks with Rob and Trudy.
