Saturday 11th May Bergen to Copenhagen

Before I move on with this blog, I must mention the something I forgot to write about in yesterday’s writings. One of the interesting things we discovered during our walk in Bergen was the very modern and efficient way they do their recycling for general households.  In many places we saw a series of 4 bins with various colours on them, to be used for rubbish and recycling. They were cemented to the ground and underground, each bin was attached to a large pipe. The recycling and rubbish was “sucked” into the pipes and away to a central place where the recycling would be sorted and reused and the rubbish dealt with. People who lived in the nearby surrounding area, had a key which would open the bins so they could place their rubbish and recycling into the bins. This meant that most of the city didn’t need rubbish and recycling collection using trucks etc. although there were large places like hotels etc. that didn’t use this system. We left beautiful Bergen today, taking a short flight of just over an hour to reach Copenhagen in Denmark. After meeting with our guide and boarding the coach, we enjoyed a 30 minute drive to our hotel. We noticed that the outer suburbs of Copenhagen had many more modern buildings all box-like in construction and certainly not as historical or beautiful as Bergen. Our lovely hotel is located closer to the centre of Copenhagen and there are more historical buildings around here. We quickly settled into our hotel before heading out for lunch. We tried desperately to find the “famous Danish Open Sandwich” but had to settle for a delicious bagel instead. The afternoon was free so not wanting to waste time we bravely took the nearby metro underground rail to the centre of Copenhagen to visit the famous Tivoli Gardens Amusement park. We weren’t interested in the amusements but certainly wanted to see the beautiful gardens which the park is set in. The park was opened in 1843 and is the 3rd oldest amusement park in the world. We thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the park, admiring the stunning gardens and the brave souls who were on the amusement rides. We stayed until the early evening to see the beautiful lights come on in the park. Unfortunately, it doesn’t become completely dark until about 10pm so we didn’t stay that late as we wanted to make sure we could retrace our steps and return safely back to our hotel which we managed to do.
