Thursday 9th May Geilo to Bergen

Leaving our ski chalet hotel before 8.30am, we were in for a very exciting day. Our coach took us further into the snow and mountains. We were amazed to see so much snow although our guide said that in many places the snow lasts all through Summer and during Winter can be up to 4mt deep. We not only saw the rushing, tumbling melted waters in the rivers and creeks but also semi-frozen lakes. As we approached our next destination of Gudvangen, we drove through quite a few long tunnels and saw many beautiful waterfalls and more snow. We joined many other tourists on a very large, quiet electric boat which took us for a stunning cruise in the Naeroyfjord and Aurlandsfjord. These fjords were surrounded by huge snow-topped mountains and we lost count of the number of waterfalls we saw. Our cruise ended in the town of Flam. Here we transferred to the Flam Railway. Another awe-inspiring experience was had as we enjoyed travelling on this famous railway, up steep hills, through snow-capped mountains and again seeing many more waterfalls. At one stage near the highest point of the line, we stopped and alighted the carriage to view a spectacular waterfall up close. While doing this, a young woman dressed in red performed a dance to music, high up on a large rock near the waterfall. After a few minutes we returned to our carriage and continued on to our destination, a transfer station where we left the Flam Railway to return to Flam. Here we boarded another modern train which took us to the town of Voss. Our coach diver had our coach waiting for us when we arrived in Voss, then driving us to the beautiful town of Bergen, where we are staying for the next two nights. We had a quick look around the city as we drove in and again it is extremely attractive with many old and beautiful buildings and a large port near the centre of town. We are looking forward to exploring the town tomorrow.

Before I move on with this blog, I must mention the something I forgot to write about in yesterday’s writings. One of the interesting things we discovered during our walk in Bergen was the very modern and efficient way they do their recycling for general households.  In many places we saw a series of 4 bins with various colours on them, to be used for rubbish and recycling. They were cemented to the ground and underground, each bin was attached to a large pipe. The recycling and rubbish was “sucked” into the pipes and away to a central place where the recycling would be sorted and reused and the rubbish dealt with. People who lived in the nearby surrounding area, had a key which would open the bins so they could place their rubbish and recycling into the bins. This meant that most of the city didn’t need rubbish and recycling collection using trucks etc. although there were large places like hotels etc. that didn’t use this system. Tuesday 7th May Dubai to Oslo

We had a very early start today, waking at 3.30am for a 4am pick-up. Our driver was on time and took us Dubai Airport where we spent quite a bit of time relaxing until our flight left at 7.40am. An uneventful flight to Oslo was followed by a fast train ride into the centre of the city of Oslo. Both Trudy and I were fascinated by the lush lovely scenery and the very cute, almost doll-house looking, homes. It was such a contrast to what we had left in Dubai. We managed to exit at the correct station for our accommodation. After leaving the station we found a lovely, young Norwegian woman who was able to direct us to our nearby hotel. After checking, in we decide to go for a walk in the area close to our hotel. The King’s Palace is just across the road from the hotel and is surrounded by a beautiful park, full of trees and flowers. The King just happened to be returning to the palace and we saw him go past. Tuesday 14th May The Port of Karlskrona, Sweden

  After a very peaceful and good sleep in our very comfortable cabin, we enjoyed a very hearty breakfast in the huge bistro. We had tried to book an excursion to take us around Karlskrona but by the time we did this, all excursions were book out. We still took the tender boat into Karlskrona, the capital of the Blekinge province of Sweden. It is an interesting town with a great naval, history dating back 300 years. After alighting from the tender we were met by a lovely young man who provided us with a map and suggested a walking tour around the town. We enjoyed the sights of the large and historic naval base, the many old churches, the town square, old wooden clock tower, the 2 nd oldest wooden church in Sweden, fish market etc. Lots of walking was completed along with sitting and enjoying the brilliant sunshine.
